The creation and evolution of the Restoration Barometer have been a robust step-by-step process dating back to 2016 and gradually progressing to the present. The scope of the Barometer continually expanded as the tool improved. Along the way, it has benefitted immensely from the insights of a diverse group of experts. In 2020, the Barometer framework’s material was extensively revised to respond to user feedback, including improvements to the economy and biodiversity indicators and develop a first-of-its-kind typology of restoration interventions to allow land-to-seascape tracking of restoration efforts.

Contributors to making the Barometer the successful tool it is today include:

As part of the 2020 revision, a critical update was the nuancing of the definition of ‘hectares under restoration’ for Indicator five. Many thanks to Professor Jeff Sayer, Faculty of Forestry, UBC, for the formulation now used by the Barometer.
